This post is dedicated to all the people I know who are feeling under the weather recently, wherever you may be in this small world. I’ve noticed that many people I know are falling ill and are not feeling they’re wonderful selves like I know they truly are. This post is for you 🙂
1. Probiotic Foods & Supplements
Gut bacteria not only helps your digestion, but it also protects the body from illnesses caused by germs and viruses. By replacing mainly bad bacteria in your gut with good bacteria, the bad bacteria can’t flourish and the good bacteria kill off any harmful invaders. See! Bacteria is good too! Take probiotic supplements every morning with a full glass of water on an empty stomach. Taking antibiotics and pharma drugs kill bacteria, the good and the bad bacteria which is why it’s especially important if you want to get better quickly and safely. The probiotics I use are called Probiotic+ by Kimberly Snyder and they’re quite unique since they’re soil based probiotic supplements. If you’re interested in purchasing a bottle, you can buy them here.
Probiotics are great and all but if you’re not eating probiotic rich foods, it won’t make much of real difference in your digestive health. Examples of probiotic rich foods are sauerkraut, miso and tempeh. The Essential Book of Fermentation says it perfectly “The gut is an internalized composting facility, feeding you exactly what nature intends for your health, when you need it, and in the forms that will do you the most good. Like any health ecosystem, eh presence of a diverse mix of bacteria and yeasts is stable and disease-resistant, and in fact goes further in its protective function by bolstering your immune system.”
2. Anti-Inflammatory and Metabolism Boosting Foods
I recommend this tea repeatedly for good reason. Ginger is a staple food in China which they use in foods and drinks. Ginger is what they call “heaty” or warming in the body which stimulates the metabolism and most importantly reduces inflammation (think fever reducer, muscle relaxant and joint-pain minimizer). Drink a cup of detox tea twice a day, preferably right in the morning before breakfast and also once in the evening. This tea is spicy, but try to drink it without honey or sweetener. Sugar feeds bacteria, and if you want to feel better, it’s just the best way to go. However, if you must use a sweetener, opt for raw or wild honey preferably with bee pollen, bee propolis or royal jelly still in the honey. Gotta love those little busy bodies!
Both curry’s, spices and spicy foods boost your metabolism, meaning the harmful infection will dissipate sooner. Ok so eating curry may not be everyone’s cup of tea when their sick (shockingly), you can certainly incorporate more gentle spices like turmeric and cinnamon. Have yourself some steel-cut oatmeal with cinnamon powder, eat a salad with add a dash of turmeric and/or cayenne pepper powder.
3. Anti-Viral Foods
I love this one because it justifies eating one of my favorite tropical treats that makes me smile from ear to ear, coconut oil! Organic cold-pressed coconut oil is anti-viral, anti-microbial and anti-fungal. It’s a serious fighter against candida (just like there’s bad gut bacteria, there’s also bad yeast that can make you feel sick or make any sickness worse). Also, just like I mentioned before, bad gut bacteria can happen and coconut oil just happens to be anti-microbial which can kill the bad bacteria that makes you sick. Garlic and onions, two very common and very potent anti-viral and anti-microbial foods that should definitely be a part of your daily diet, but more so when your feeling sick.
4. Essential Oils
Pure essential oils don’t just make the room smell amazing, but it also disinfects the air from germs and viruses! You know there’s a reason why our ancestors used oils of cinnamon and pine during the Christmas season. Those scents are powerful air disinfectants during the winter season when many people are susceptible of getting sick. My favorites when I get sick or I’m preventing sickness are eucalyptus, thyme, pine, rose geranium. But essentially you can use any high grade EO and it will disinfect the air, but the ones I mentioned are particularly beneficial for clearing infections through respiration. Aaaaahhhhh….
Many pure, organic EO’s are ingestible also like oregano oil. Just one drop of oil of oregano is powerful enough to clear quite a bit of candida you may be carrying inside you. If you do decide to ingest essential oils, look for therapeutic, organic, food grade EO’s and go very easy on them! They are powerful.
5. Soak In Those Rays
Getting at least 15 minutes a day of direct sunlight is so crucial for building that vitamin D which can not only boost your mood, but it’ll also speed up the healing process in the body. Of course, it also helps to transport calcium directly into your bones. It’s quite difficult to get vitamin D from foods, but humans naturally metabolize it through direct exposure to sunlight on bare skin. So slather on that coconut oil folks and bask in the wonderful sun!
Cheers to less sick days! Stay healthy my friends 🙂
